The WildCam Project

The WildCam Project was started in 2002 with one EagleCam focused on an eagles nest in the Southwest Cape.  Through an online poll, the nesting eagles were named George and Gracie, and the two birds were long-time mates.  George died two years ago, and Gracie has selected another mate, George II.  Gracie is about 20 years old or more.  Her new mate, George II, appears to be much younger.

The City added the OspreyCam and the OwlCam shortly after putting up EagleCam.  However, technical difficulties soon idled these two cameras.  The camera trained on George and Gracie also bit the dust.  We have been working to bring these cameras back online with new equipment, and we were able to do so a year ago.

We upgraded the cameras at the original EagleCam and OspreyCam sites.  We were able to get the OwlCam adjusted, and we added a second EagleCam to the mix.  The EagleCam did not function properly and was removed, and the OspreyCam was damaged by lightning.  Three of the cameras are connected to cable lines, and the 4th one is connected to DSL.  This enables live video streaming as opposed to the static image option.  All of the cameras except for EagleCam II have infrared light, which should allow for limited nighttime viewing.

Please Note:  We encourage people to watch our birds; however, we are providing a live video stream directly from the camera.  The video stream can be slowed by too many users logged in at the same time.   So that everyone has an opportunity to watch and enjoy, please limit the amount of time you spend logged into the cameras.

EagleCam
EagleCam I is trained on George II and Gracie.  Gracie is “Grand Matron” of Cape Coral’s nesting eagles.  She has been fledging young eagles successfully for many years at her long-time location.  While the loss of her long-time mate, George, in 2006 was heartbreaking, Gracie found a new mate.  She and George II successfully fledged eagles this past season.

EagleCam II is at an alternate site, and these two mates also have been successful for a few years.

OspreyCam
The OspreyCam is focused on an artificial nesting platform erected by LCEC (our electric provider).  The two adults have been using this platform for at least 11 years.  The ospreys spend the majority of the year in Cape Coral.

OwlCam
The OwlCam is looking at an established burrow.  While you can see the birds during the day, most of their activity is at night.  Young ones probably will not be seen until the spring.

The WildCam Project is a joint effort of the City of Cape Coral, LCEC and Comcast.
