Conceptual Plans for Yacht Club
One of the gems of Cape Coral's park system is the Yacht Club Community Park, located along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River on the southeastern tip of the city. The Yacht Club provides the residents and visitors of Cape Coral a diversity of recreational and cultural opportunities. Diversity of uses within the park include, but are not limited to; a beach, pier, swimming pool, community center, senior center, boat ramp, marina, and tennis courts. However, the relative compact size and wide range of uses often results in conflicts between uses within the park and in the vicinity of the park. This compression of diverse uses can lead to park overcrowding and inefficient use of this valuable resource. The City's pursuit of a master plan for the Yacht Club Community Park is a proactive step to assure that the citizens of Cape Coral receive the highest value and greatest use of this gem in the City's park system by maximizing the waterfront features and other recreational opportunities while assuring surrounding neighborhood compatibility.
In April 2002, the Cape Coral City Council approved the "City of Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Master Plan" (Parks Master Plan). One of the key components for improvements to the City's existing park system within the Parks Master Plan is for the reevaluation and redesign of the Yacht Club Community Park. The Yacht Club Community Park Master Plan will address and respond to the following issues based on the findings of the Parks Master Plan:
• Park Functional Issues – Location and condition of park uses and amenities, traffic circulation, parking, and infrastructure;
• Park Uses - Appropriateness of existing uses, focus on water-dependent/related uses, expansion of park to recently acquired lands on Floridian Court and Dolphin Drive, and compatibility with surrounding neighborhoods; and
• Park Identity - Define entry to the park, enhance the aesthetics of the park, and define the relationship to Caloosahatchee River.
This Yacht Club Community Park Master Plan is a two-phase process. Phase one will provide an inventory and assessment of the existing park, gather public input and comment regarding the future of the Yacht Club Community Park, and prepare a conceptual master plan. The second phase of the project will refine the conceptual master plan and provide for specific recommendations for changes and improvements along with cost estimates and schedule for completion of the changes and improvements. Phase one of the project is planned to be completed by the end of June 2006. Phase two of the project is planned to be completed by the end of 2006.
Tonight’s public meeting is critical in the development of this Master Plan. Prior to the development of any recommendations for changes or improvements to the Yacht Club Community Park, it is vital to obtain input from the community regarding the desires, concerns, and needs related to the park. This input will provide the Project Team with information directly from the users of the park, as well as those who live within the vicinity of the park, that will help in shaping recommendations to meet the community’s needs. The successful development of the Yacht Club Community Park Master Plan will respond to community needs, provide for the efficient and beneficial use of property, and provide for a park that is embraced by the City as a whole. |
