Generally, prior to hiring, announcements are made in all
statewide regional fire academies, several major newspapers,
as well as local community colleges, advising that the Fire
Rescue & Emergency Management Services Department is
accepting applications, including details of how to apply.
Written, oral, and physical tests are part of the application
process.
The order in which the tests are administered may vary.
The written exam will assess your ability in areas such
as following written instructions based on technical information,
map reading, math computation, and written communications
skills.
The physical ability test is conducted in an untimed continuous
series of evolutions, which will simulate job-related tasks.
The oral board exam consists of theoretical situations,
which seek to measure your interpersonal and communication
skills.
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS?
Proof of being at least 18-years of age at time of application.
Proof of graduation from an accredited high school. GED
or high school equivalency is acceptable.
Must attain a passing score on the Written Exam to proceed
further.
Must pass a physical ability examination.
Must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one
year preceding being hired, and sign a sworn statement attesting
to this fact.
Must meet all moral and criminal background guidelines and
all additional requirements mandated by Florida Statutes
for certifications as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical
Technician.
Must pass an extensive background check.
Must pass a pre-employment medical examination to include
alcohol and drug screening.
Must pass a comprehensive performance based oral exam.
Must have a good driving record and obtain a valid Florida
Chauffeurs/Class D license.
Qualified veterans will be given preference in accordance
with Federal Law.
